The Healthcare Working Group is striving to ensure that systems
are in place to screen all pregnant women for tobacco use, and
that all pregnant and postpartum smokers receive best-practice
cessation counseling by 2005.
Currently, the Healthcare Working Group is promoting and
distributing the CME-approved training manual and related materials
developed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists;
gathering and sharing provider success stories to promote the
use of the 5 A's approach; and developing mini-grants to encourage
and learn from successful smoking cessation efforts in Native
American communities.

This Working Group is working with the entertainment community to place
stories on network and cable television shows, and developing and
placing National Partnership PSAs to alert pregnant women to available
resources. Ongoing media outreach is also underway to place stories about
smoking cessation for pregnant women in the news. In addition, the

The Policy Working Group's goal is to promote
policies that support smoke-free environments and improved access
to cessation treatments, and encourage economic support for such
policies.
This Working Group is developing a clearinghouse of materials that
partner organizations can use to conduct policy-related activities
on the federal, state and local levels. They are conducting a
survey of partner organizations to identify what kinds of materials
currently exist and what activities organizations are engaged in.
This information will serve as the foundation for the
clearinghouse, and the Policy Working Group will create
complimentary materials to fill in any gaps and develop a toolkit
on how to use available materials. The Policy Working Group will
also coordinate policy-related outreach efforts among partners to
reduce duplication in activities and to leverage available
resources.
